Did you know… - Baby's Day

Did you know that babies are born with 300 bones while an adult has 206 ?

Babies are born with cartilage that hardens into bones - a process called ossification. So some bones that were born separately fuse together as babies develop.

Curious? Let's see some examples.

Skull

The skull, at birth, is a set of separate bones that overlap at birth, in order to facilitate the delivery of the baby. It is only after some time, around 2 years of age, that the skull is completely fused, forming a single bone.

Hip

The ossification process with regard to the hip is usually only completed at the end of adolescence. It happens when three different bones (the ilium, ischium and pubis) fuse to form one (hip).

knees

An RX of a baby at birth can be scary because you can't see the knees, they are "empty", it's as if they don't exist. This happens because they are made up of cartilage, which only ceases to be when the child learns to walk. Especially without falling!

Interesting isn't it?

I leave you this curiosity today and until next time!
